Traditional context
When compared with photos of contemporary city landscapes, district 3 of New York prefers skyline images in traditional context. Survey participants were asked to evaluate photos of contemporary skylines, nature, and traditional skylines. The photographs were presented in three nine-fold sets, and participants were asked to select one photo set to put on their workdesk or home walls. After reviewing each set, they were then asked to justify their choice. To better understand why this is the case, we can examine the characteristics of different skylines and the factors that influence their value.
Nature skylines
Using a series of color images of skylines in various cities, this study sought to determine how cityscapes affect people’s feelings of pleasantness. Of the three types of skylines, nature skylines tended to be more pleasant than traditional ones. Other important characteristics of skylines are peacefulness, memorability, and distinctiveness. In addition, people’s attitudes toward a skyline depend on the city where they live, and are more favorable to contemporary skylines in urban settings.
To test this hypothesis, Nasar and Terzano (2010) compared three types of city skylines to see which one evoked the same responses. This result suggests that both natural and urban skylines elicit similar judgments. But there’s one further finding that a skyline’s ability to match its surroundings has a strong psychological effect. People have a natural tendency to prefer landscapes with higher entropy. Similarly, people may prefer city skylines that match their surroundings in terms of complexity.
Trifecta

In Jersey City, the near-supertall 99 Hudson street is a standout. And in Brooklyn, the 9 Dekalb facade is also one of the city’s most iconic skyscrapers.
The Trifecta is a new multimillion dollar headquarters for the Holland Restaurant Group, which includes Graeter’s ice cream parlor, LaRosa’s Pizzeria, and Skyline Chili. The building will be 35,000 square feet and will feature all three eateries. The Trifecta is part of a larger multimillion dollar development on Taylor Mill Road near Interstate 275. The 9,000 square-foot building will have an upscale atmosphere and be home to two restaurants and a burger bar.
